Alan MEARNS: J. S. Bach for Guitar

Presenting a new approach to arranging Bach for the guitar, this edition presents Alan Mearns’ innovative arrangements of two preludes from the Well-Tempered Clavier, the iconic prelude from the first unaccompanied Cello Suite, a well-known chorale prelude and, from the unaccompanied violin works, the monumental Chaconne and the substantial third Sonata.

In addition to practical performance scores, also included are comparison scores for the works to which Mearns has made substantial additions, along with notated realizations of his sophisticated use of extended cross-string ornamentation. CGSE-0070. 118 pages.

“Bach-Godowsky, Bach-Busoni, Bach-Leonhardt. And now, Bach-Mearns, for no transcription of Bach deserves a hyphen more than the guitar transcription presented here.” Mark Delpriora (Guitar Chair Manhattan School of Music, Instructor The Juilliard School)

Alan Mearns has taken these well-known works where no one else dared before. If you think you have heard Bach on the guitar, think again!” Dr. René Izquierdo (Professor of Guitar University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee)

‘Bach was the first non-guitarist composer whose non-guitar works became a central fixture in the instrument’s repertoire…the transcriptions by Mearns and edited by Yates take this endeavor to a new level.” SOUNDBOARD MAGAZINE
